Atmosphere
Sir, — There is well-docu-mented evidence for the "greenhouse effect”; that is, the heating of the Earth’s atmosphere through the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in it from burning oil and coal. The prophets of doom also invite us to consider the “nuclear winter” to which nuclear explosions might render us liable. They appear not to have noticed that these two phenomena have opposite effects. If we are to believe what they say, we should apparently let off a few nuclear bombs occasionally to counter the greenhouse effect.—Yours, etc., BRUCE MOON. July 5, 1987.
