Violin and piano recital
Kathleen Winkler (violin) and Deborah Berman (piano), presented by the United States Information Service at the Great Hall, Arts Centre, July 3, I.l* p.m. Reviewed by Philip Norman. Kathleen Winkler and Deborah Berman are both performers of considerable skill and intelligence. As evidenced in yesterday’s lunchtime concert at the Great Hall, their combined artistry produces music that is finely balanced and sensitively wrought This is the product of an easy communication between the two visiting AiiniMican musicians. Phrases were tailored as one, attacks immaculately timed; and rhythms carefully matched.
Their ■.four-item programme opened with a deft performance of Leclairi Sonata Ho. 3. In theTAndante-and Largo"
movements were spaciously delivered with graceful phrasing and well controlled tone. The Allegro and Presto movements were presented at sparkling tempi, powered by buoyant pulses and zestful rhythms. The stylish sounds remained commendably crisp throughout The centrepiece of the programme, Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in G, was offered an intense, richly coloured reading. From the dramatic turbulence of the opening Vivace through the tenderness of the lyrical Adagio to the poignant close of the bubbling Allegro, a wide range of emotions was explored by the performers.
It was a most satisfying interpretation of this challenging sonata; a happy marriage of sure-fingered craft and detailed expres-
sion. The lightweight poetry of Kreisler’s "Liebesleid” provided an admirable emotional contrast to the rhetoric of the Brahms. This short, folksy work was delivered with pleasing restraint, though enlivened with touches of sharp rhythmic pointing. European folk material also formed the basis of the closing item, Hubay’s “Hejre Kati.” Infectious rhythms moved in tandem with broad sweeps of melody as the performers reflected the gipsy soul of the composition. The athletic embellishments in the violin line were cleanly and effortlessly articulated above the pulsating piano accompaniment
Kathleen Winkler and Deborah Berman will give a full-length recital at the Great Hall on Sunday afternoon. Their skilful soundsJyre worth hearing.
