Senior wins Monte Carlo open

NZPA-Reuter Monte Carlo Peter Senior bravely held off a last-ditch challenge from fellow Australian Rodger Davis to win the Monte Carlo Open golf championship by one shot on Saturday. Senior fired a 66 for a 14 under par 260 total which equalled the European record for 72 holes set by Australian Kel Nagle in 1961. Davis came home in a spectacular 29 for 62 — a round matched by Ireland’s Philip Walton, third on 266.

Senior, Australia’s leading money winner this year, started out four strokes clear of the field and five ahead of Davis. He was still four ahead of his countryman after turning in 34 but Davis birdied three of the next four holes to get within a shot. Senior hit back with two 10-foot birdie putts but could only watch from behind as Davis holed from 15 feet for an eagle three at the seventeenth, thei birdied the last from a metre.

“it’s great to equal Nagle’s record but quite honestly I’d have been just as excited if I’d won with a score of 290. The secret was dropping only five shots to par all week despite the stops and starts caused by low cloud.” Walton, former Walker Cup amateur, boosted his hopes of a Ryder Cup place, driving the green at the 300 yards fifteenth hole for an eagle two, then finishing his round with two birdies. Defending champion,

Severiano Ballesteros, who, like Davis complained of jet-lag after the U.S. Open, finished with a 65 but had to be content with joint fourth place on 267 alongside Britain’s Paul Curry, who shot 68.
