Apartheid

Sir, —There would seem to be a contradiction when L. R. Wilkinson (June 22) seeks to excuse “the few short years” of the apartheid South Africa regime, along with lengthy colonial rule in southern Africa, while condemning Zimbabwe, which is a more recently established administration, still possibly struggling with misfortunes that were a legacy from colonialism. Such past rulers (world-wide) were tempted to abuse their positions and “solve” the problems of indigenous tribal clashes by drawing straight lines on maps when redefining territorial boundaries that had previously been marked by natural features, rivers, mountains. I have been in the presence of Maori people who were quick to condemn as racist (favouring Maori) the “ad- ... vantages unavailable to whites.” .

My experience of oppressed peoples is that they seek no more than is rightfully theirs. — Yours, etc., KENNETH EBER MARTIN. June 24, 1987.
