Mining fee rises ‘savage’
PA Wellington Ministry of Energy mining fee rises averaging 4000 per cent which began yesterday have shocked mine operators. The Mining and Ex- : ploration Association’s 1 president, Mr' ' Robert ’ Adamson, - said “the 1 in- 2 creases were ‘■‘sudden; and -»> '•savage?— ; r ' The increases' are Ulus--' * trated in a mining licence for five to 50 hectares rising from $5 to $5OOO. The chairman of the West Coast Goldminers’ Association, Mr Tony Jury, said that while big companies would not suffer greatly /the - small firms would/possibly be forced out of business. The new fees would lead to more illegal mining for gold. “There are quite a few people here, many of them retired, who go out and fossick for gold to supplement their income. Most, I would say, will not bother or will do it illegally.” ' , ,
