(Reviewed by
Kay Forrester)
Hedgehog parents tell hedgehog babies about that pioneer of road safety, Victor Maximilian St George Hedgehog — or so Dick King-Smith would have us believe. 1 It was young Max who found a saviour for the hedgehogs of his street in the lollipop lady who was able to stop traffic with her magic wand. The story -4- splendid for reading aloud, simple enough for young readers to manage alone — follows the near-misses of Max as he endeavours to 'find a safe way across the road to the park. And the moral of the story? It has been statistically proven, in chapter and in verse, That if a car and hedgehog mix, the hedgehog comes off worse ... Spare a thought for hedgehogs, hovering bn the-brink, Spare a thought for hedgehogs, lest they become extinct. (With apologies to Pam Ayres).
