Passengers flee burning aircraft

PA Wellington The pilot and five passengers dashed for safety after fire broke out in the engine of a taxi-ing commuter aircraft at Wellington Airport, crash firemen said.

The plane could have exploded had the pilot not taxied towards the airport’s crash fire station, they said. The fire appliances had to race only about 300 m to reach the plane, which caught fire as it taxied for take-off to Motueka about 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday. The airport fire officer, Mr Peter Fox, said the port engine was well ablaze by the time the appliances arrived.
