Woman accepted for transplant

PA Wellington Gloria Ransfield wept on Wednesday after hearing that she had been accepted for a heart transplant at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. But first she must find at least $63,000 for the surgery. So far her family has raised almost $30,000 and now that she has been accepted, can apply

for a $40,000 Government grant. But her cardiologist, Dr Stewart Mann, said that that would not be enough. More money was needed for travel expenses and accommodation for about six months. “This is miserable,” he said. “It is rotten medicine as far as I am concerned.” The family would prob-

ably need at least $30,000 more before she could go, he said. Mrs Ransfield, of Lower Hutt, said the support of family and friends had been excellent. “But it is not very nice to have to beg for money. New Zealand prides itself on its free health service, but it is not there when you need it,” she said.
