BBC puts limits on live TV

London correspondent Rugby fans in Britain will have to travel to Wales this week-end to watch the semi-finals of the rugby World Cup live on television. The 8.8. C. has decided “for financial reasons” to screen live throughout most of Britain only the second semi-final, between Wales and New Zealand, starting at 5.55 a.m. on Sunday (British time.) The first semi-final, between France and Australia, will be shown live in Wales, but not elsewhere. Viewers there will see edited highlights in later sports programmes. Fans in Scotland are even worse off; neither match will be shown there live. A 8.8. C. spokesman in London said that regional headquarters made their own decisions

about live telecast programmes. The Welsh region had decided to show both matches live because Wales was still in the World Cup. The Welsh involvement in the second semifinal justified the cost of screening it in otherareas of Britain, she said. 1 ' Spokesmen for the Scottish and Irish regions said they were following the lead of the 8.8. C. head office in London. The Scottish region, however, has decided against screening either game live. The London spokesman said that, as far as she knew, there had been no complaints about the decision not to show the telecast of the first semifinal.

“However, there hasn’t been any publicity about it yet, so we may get some later,” she said.
