SIDELINES

STEFFI GRAFS win In the French open women's singles tennis championship at the week-end boosted her earnings for the year to over half a million United States dollars. Not a bad haul for a young lady, still a few days short of her eighteenth birthday. Graf heads the list of money winners on the women’s circuit and is well clear of Chris Evert (United States) in second place. Martina Navratilova (United States), whose iuS9O,OOO cheque for runner-up in Paris took her career winnings past SUSI2M, is third on the list. The earnings of the top six are: Graf, $U5567»007, Ij Evert, 374,793, 2; Navratilova, 270,472, 3; Hana MandUkova (Czechoslovakia), 255,074, 4; Zina Garrison, (United States), 187,302 5; Helena Sukova (Czechoslovakia), 173,672, 6. SUNDAY’S amateur boxing tournament at the Hornby Rugby League Clubrooms has been named in memory of Shane Gordon, a promising young competitor who was killed in a motor accident last December. Three months earlier, Gordon, aged 18, had gained a unanimous points decision over Kevin Stirling (Nelson) in the final of the Canterbury intermediate lightweight championship. A FIRST was almost certainly created in the Canterbury rugby squad announced this week. It contains three sets of brothers, the Deans, Robbie and Bruce, the Earls, Chris and Andy, and the Bachops, Stephen and Graeme. It would certainly be a record if all six should get to play in the same game, but with Bruce Deans and Graeme Bachop both half-backs this is only a faint possibility. The nearest three brothers have came to playing for Canterbury at the same time was the Stuarts. Bob and Kevin played together from 1948 to 1955 and in 1957 their younger brother, John, had four games. TWO PROMINENT lawn bowlers in Canterbury died recently. The first, most unexpectedly, was Jack Swift. Last summer Swift skipped a team from his New Brighton club to victory in the champlon-of-champions fours, New Brighton's first centre title for more than 59 years. Swift was also an executive member of the Canterbury centre, and at the age of only 51 was clearly destined for bigger things in bowls administration. The second death was that of Morrie Robson, of Woolston Park, who had had a heart complaint for a number of years, a complaint which restricted his bowls in recent times. But at, his peak in the 1979 s Robson was rated one of the best draw bowlers in Canterbury, and despite his HI health he was still good enough to win the open pairs in 1983. ORGANISERS OF the revived intermediate schools’ rugby competition this winter have introduced a -new method of allocating points. A win brings 10 points and the referee rates each team out of 10 on first its dress and then its sportsmanship, making a possible total of 30 points. A team from Chisnaliwood had no trouble picking up the maximum points for sportsmanship this week. It led 28-4 at half-time, but then withdrew its two biggest boys who were its trump cards. It still won, 3218, after a far more even second half.
