A.I.D.S. testing

Sir,—Several days ago we saw President Reagan on television meeting boos and hisses when mating an important speech em-

bracing comprehensive tests for A.I.D.S. on immigrants, prison inmates and couples seeking marriage licences. Blood tests are already mandatory for the last group in the United States, and it seems reasonable that they should embrace checks for AI.D.S. As for inunigrants, such testing, had it been available, would have kept all the true A.I.D.S. cases out of New Zealand, for the sufferers were not tourists, but expatriates returning to martyrdom. Human rights should come first, but our Immigration Department is already tough on other counts. Ronald Reagan’s speech is mentioned briefly in “The Press” among what could almost be described as pro-A.I.D.S. propaganda. An item reporting a Senate vote of 96-0 for testing immigrants surely merited a headline, but was tucked away in the cable briefs.”—Yours, etc., 5 VARIAN J. WILSON June 5, 1987.
