Young Nationals

. Sir,—Susan Taylor (June 8) expresses her disappointment of the Young Nationals’ “No pay for doing nothing” call. The full remit passed at Akaroa was “that Young Nationals endorses the policy that there will be no dole

paid unless some form of training or work is undertaken.” The full truth of the policy hits out at the abuse of the welfare system. • It, however, does not dismiss the concern for those who do need financial assistance. Self-respect is earned not by abusing oneself by holidaying on the dole, but by one’s achievement in gaining skills that will, in the Tong term, place, one in a promising career. Long terms of doing nothing are mentally dangerous. By having oneself occupied, I this does not happen.—Yours, etc./ WAYNE MOORE. June 8, 1987,
