Oil slick coats Avon River
A burst hydraulic hose led to an oil slick oa the Avon River yesterday afternoon. .< The thin film of oil was deariy/ visible about 5 p.m. from Salisbury Street east tn Stanmore Road. The deputy chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, Mr Don Cooper, said a hree had Mhod' 30; water drain and ftbwed into, the river at the Salisbury Street-Cambridge Terrace outfall. ■ ‘lt was a very thlnoll and it spread easily across the water. sionallyget into the. river Wd the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society had been advised and would be watching the river life over the next few days. “We rather doubt there will be losses, being such a light oiL”
