Fewer nurses wanted
Fewer for enrolment students may be sought by the Canterbury Hospital Board this year. Each year, the Health Department asks the board how many students for enrolment it wants to enrol in the year beginning June 1. For the last two years, the board has asked for and received approval to take 85 students. In previous years it has asked for only 70. The board’s chief nurse, Miss Margaret Darby, said yesterday that this had been done to counteract the loss of junior nursing staff as the three-year nursing programmes were phased out and to increase the number of enrolled nurses available to Templeton and Sunnyside hospitals.
“However, having the number at; 85 does not help Templeton directly. The decision is made, by the nurse as to whether he or she wants to take up such a position.” Staffing levels in the general hospitals were now stable and as there were fewer vacancies available, Miss Darby recommended that only 70 students for enrolment be sought this year.
