Aorangi ‘worst affected’
Aorangi, including Timaru, has been one of the areas worst affected by economic change, according to the regional development review. The review, covering the February-December period last year, attributed Aorangi’s plight to the pastoral farming downturn.
Unemployment had risen from 3.5 per cent in March to 8 per cent in November with the largest job losses in the agricultural sector. The review quoted a Chamber of Commerce survey from August which anticipated a 75 per cent drop in retail sales to the rural sector last year. Aside from the sheep industry, wheat farmers also were facing hard times with the deregulation of the industry and low international wheat prices.
