Preventive detention

PA Auckland A Blockhouse Bay man has been sentenced to preventive detention for raping two women in the same day. John Christopher Durno, aged 33, unemployed, is already serving a term of 3>/ 2 years jail for raping a woman at Waitoa in May last year. Durno denied raping the two Auckland women on May 18, 1985, but was found guilty by a jury after a trial in the High Court in Auckland. His counsel, Mr Paul

Trehey, told Mr Justice Speight that Durno was born in Yugoslavia, and did not acknowledge any next-of-kin. He had previous convictions, mostly for dishonesty, from the age of 13. The offences occurred against a background of cannabis use. The two complainants had since been involved as defendants in criminal proceedings. His Honour said Durno should be sentenced to preventive detention because society needed to be protected from him.
