Trumpet opens jazz festival
A small crowd attended the launching of the first Christchurch International Jazz Festival at Amuri Courts yesterday afternoon.. The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, officially opened the festival after a good-natured demonstration of his trumpet-playing skills. “All the acts have a wide appeal. The festival will help local artists as well as bring in people from overseas,” Sir Hamish said in his opening address. “I hope the festival will be well supported. It will provide great encouragement for local artists and give Christchurch people a taste of something different.” The festival will begin on
Thursday, May 28, and .is sponsored by the Amuri Corporation. It is a joint venture between Jazz South, the Arts Festival committee, the United States Information Service, the Town Hall, and the musicians. The president of Jazz South, Mr Jack Collins, has been planning the festival for three months. The launching was to have taken place in Cathedral Square but the venue was changed because of rain. In the week preceding the festival, jazz musicians will travel round Christchurch performing from a mobile platform. Artists participating in the event include Malcolm McNeill, the Barrett Sisters, and Georgie Fame.
