No more films for Olivier
NZPA-AP London The celebrated actor, Laurence Olivier, who has been limiting his film work for years, has decided to retire from film acting because of advancing age, a spokeswoman said.
Lord Olivier will be 80 on Friday. Sue Green, assistant to his agent, Laurence Evans, confirmed a report in “The Times” quoting Mr Evans as saying Lord Olivier “is in very good shape, but he wants to take an easier course.” "It’s his age. People expect him to go on forever, but he doesn’t want to,” Mr Evans was quoted as saying. The actor last appeared on the screen in the 1985 film, “Wild Geese II,” preferring to work on television in .shows like “The Ebony Tower” and “Lost Empires.” Film footage of him can be seen nightly in the London stage musical, "Time.”
For years, Lord Olivier has fought various illnesses, including kidney ailments, pleurisy, cancer,
and a degenerative muscle disease. Ms Green confirmed that Lord Olivier would continue to do prose and verse readings for radio and television
On Friday, Lord Olivier will be heard on British Broadcasting Corporation Radio in Peter Barnes’ radio play, “No End To Dreaming.”
