Pedal power back in force
PA Wellington Pedal power is back on the beat, with police giving 10-speed bicycles a turn. The mountain bikes are on a six-month trial to see if they will be suitable for community constables and section staff. Picton, Nelson, Upper Hutt, Masterton and Wellington will be the first to test the bicycles, that come complete with white police livery, blue trim and a crest on the forks.
Superintendent Wally Robertson, director of management services at Police National Headquarters, said the trial results would be awaited with interest.
“There is a lot to be said for bicycles,” he said.
“Staff in some stations already find them useful on night patrols or on general inquiry work when perhaps the only station car is committed elsewhere.”
Stations had been canvassed to find the potential use of 10-speeds. Response was good, and at $450 they were far cheaper to run than a $28,500 patrol car, he said.
Policemen on bicycles were a common sight many years ago. Staff were given an allowance to cover costs, but today only two police officers regularly collect their 70c a day allowance for using their own bicycles.
