Action needed on junction
Improvements to the Church Corner junction should not be delayed further, the Waimairi District Council agreed yesterday. The Waimairi council and Paparua County Council have held several meetings to determine a new design for the junction. The District Council was told yesterday that another meeting was planned for July 17 before any action was possible. Traffic lights were preferred for the junction but it would be difficult to synchronise them with other lights on Riccarton Road. Cr Brian Shackel said work at the junction had been delayed for too long. Some action was n|gded as soon as possibly to
relieve confusion among motorists.
The District Chairman, Mrs Margaret Murray, said it could be several years before lights could be installed and synchronised at the junction. Money had been provided in this year’s estimates to allow some form of interim design change “which could last several years.” The cost would be shared' with the Paparua council. Accident compensation Council staff will be told how much money the council pays on their behalf in accident compensation levies.
Cr Des King said the council paid 97c for every $lOO of its wages bill. The District Clerk, Mr Peter Chapple, said a recent meeting of employers showed the Government was receiving “considerable criticism” since the levies were increased. It was a topical subject and staff could easily be told of the situation, he said. Cr Brian Shackel said accident compensation was “symptomatic of the weakness of the welfare system.” “So many people are getting in tune with getting money for doing no work.p
A tutor on an Access programme was being paid less than half of the people on the course. “When we get to that situation we require a complete review of the benefit system,” he said. Parked trucks Discussions would continue with the owner of two big trucks which were parked at night on Hampton Road, Burnside, the council was told. A by-law to prohibit trucks parking in residential areas overnight was considered by the works, reserves, and traffic committee after Hampton Road residents signed a petition.
