Accident compensation needs ‘urgent review’
PA Wellington Federated Farmers say the Government must move quickly to solve the crippling burden of Accident Compensation Corporation payments on employers. “The fundamentals must be reformed but in the meantime an urgent problem must be quickly resolved,” said the senior vice-president, Mr Brian Chamberlin. • “All employers, including those in the agricultural industry, face bills which they cannot meet, yet are required to pay in a few weeks time. “We agree with manufacturers that the most sensible step would be to
introduce a pay-as-you-go system for the immediate future and at the same time urge the Law Commission to review the fundamental structure as a matter of utmost urgency.” Mr Chamberlin said the Federation wanted: The cost of the first four weeks of any incapacity made the responsibility of the individual; the Accident Compensation Corporation to deal with accidents only; an incentive or penalty introduced to reduce accidents in the workplace. The employers’ obligation of carrying the cost of non-work related accidents eliminated.
