Maori group for Fiji?

PA Whangarei A small delegation of prominent Maoris may soon go to Fiji. Mr Dover Samuels, a Maori representative on the New Zealand council of the Labour party, said he approached the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, with the idea of the delegation on Tuesday. Mr Samuels said the trip was prompted by “irresponsible” and “misinformed” ideas of minority Maori groups in New Zealand. Some of these groups supported the military coup in Fiji, seeing it as a parallel to their land

claims and the sovereignty issue in New Zealand. Mr Samuels said these misinformed ideas needed to be corrected, and the only way that could be done as to send a delegation to Fiji to study the situation there and report back to the New Zealand Maori Council. Minority groups who supported the coup were ignoring the principle of democracy, Mr Samuels said. Two wars were fought to implement it, and many Maoris fought in|those wars.
