Sir,—Mr O’Rourke’s Labour Party rebuilding technique for ,the economy (May 15) is that of the developer who first completely destroys what is standing in the often-misguided belief that what he is going to replace it with will be better. Well, the site is almost totally clear; economic growth down from 8 per cent to minus 0.05 per cent, overseas debt way up, as is inflation and interest rates. We now have no option but to rebuild completely. Unfortunately, Labour has neither the skill, material, nor the political ability. At the moment it also seems to be having union problems. — Yours, etc., PHILIP HALL. May 16, 1987.
