Oxygen lack leads to brain damage
NZPA-AP Katmandu More than 500,000 Nepalese are mentally retarded to some extent because of brain damage due to lack of oxygen at birth, according to a study. The report, produced by the Association for Welfare of the Mentally Retarded (A.W.M.R.) in Nepal in collaboration with the Norwegian Fund for the Mentally Retarded, said nearly half
the victims were under the age of 18. The other leading causes of mental retardation were listed as early childhood malnutrition, and diseases like menengitis and encephalitis. More than half of these cases can be prevented through better birth conditions, immunisation against disease, safety precautions and attention during pregnancy, the report said.
