Former councillor seeks Lyttelton seat

By

JANE ENGLAND

An Ashburton man and former Christchurch City councillor, Mr Geoff Stone, yesterday announced he would seek nomination as a Labour candidate for Lyttelton. Mr Stone served on the council from 1980 to 1986. He contested the Ashburton seat at the 1984 General Election and said this dramatically reduced the majority in the formerly safe National scat. He had previously been prevented from _ seeking nomination for seats in the Canterbury region until the finish of the summer crop period on his Ashburton market garden.

The retirement of the Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, from the Lyttelton electorate had left the field open but with a shorter campaign period bringing it into a byelection context, he said. Mr Stone topped the poll for Christchurch City’s North Ward in the 1980 local body elections and was the only success-

ful Labour candidate for North Ward and the Christchurch Transport Board in 1983. He was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and the University of Canterbury, and is a former New Zealand universities rugby league representative. He has served on the Canterbury regional coundtf of the Labour Party hfid with his wife, Liz, was

an active member of the Christchurch Central electorate. Mrs Hercus had been able to maintain her level of work in the electorate because she attracted competent workers sympathetic to the individual problems of her constituents, he said. Mr Stone said he believed his broad background had kept him in touch with a range of issues which were relevant to the electorate. If selected he plans to concentrate initially on local issues and constituency problems while maintaining his interest in town planning. “Of prime importance, however, for all horticultural market and distribution workers is the abysmally low wages prevalent in that whole industry,” he said. “If any national issue deserves attention my personal preference would be to push for a better deal via minimum wages for thoseJpeople,” he said. v
