Heart-stopping Cup moment

PA Wellington New Zealand retained the Trans-Tasman Cup at the Bell Tea three-day horse trial at Taupo on Sunday, but not without a heart-stoppjng moment in the final round, the show-jumping. The moment came when Waikato’s Vaughn Jefferis, the individual leader on Sandalwood, almost omitted one of the jumps. That would have eliminated him and given the trophy to Australia. However, the 10 technical faults Incurred by Jefferis for circling back to take the fence and the 3.75 time faults accrued were not enough to take the title from his grasp, such was the lead he had established in the dressage phase last Friday. . He had also completed one of only three clear crosscountry rounds inside the time allowed on Saturday to take a lead of 15.4 points going into the show-jumping. The Newmans New Zealand team of Jefferis, Andrew Scott and Muir of Ord (Feeding), Sally Dalrymple and Sky Command (Bulls), and Merran Hain and Chief (Gisborne) finished first, third, sixth and eleventh respectively, with the best three scores counting. The Australian team finished second, fifth, seventh and thirteenth. The winning margin was 19 points, New Zealand finishing with a total of 202.15 penalties to Australia’s 221.15. Scott Keach and Trade Commissioner (South Australia) finished second, having pulled up from eighth after the dressage, with no penalties on Saturday. Although! he had a showjumping fence down, it did not affect his placing because Scott and Muir of Ord, lying third after their fault-free performance on Saturday, also had one fence down. It was a heartening performance by New Zealand, which retained the cup it won at Gawler, South Australia, in 1985, without the services of the leading riders. Tinks Pottinger, Trudy Boyce, and the Los Angeles Olympics gold medallist, Mark Todd. All three have commitments in Britain and Europe,

although Pottinger, home at Masterton for a short time, won the novice trials on Arpac Copyright after adding no penalties to her dressage score. . -v The intermediate trial was won by Hamish Cameron (Masterton) riding Maximiilian, by a comfortable margin from Bryce Newman and Taurus (Kawerau). The young rider trial was won by Hapnish Disbrowe and Agent Orange (Auckland) with Lynne Clark and Wetherby Solomon (Taranaki) second. The annual inter-island teams competition for the Silver Spurs was won by the North Island team of David Goodin and Ohio (Te Kauwhata), Angela Davies and Paramount (South Auckland), and the intermediates, Joanne Shepherd and Delta (Kaitaia) and Sandra Hunter and Warrendorf (Wellington). Only two South Island horses finished. Results:

out of Cardiff Lass, formerly one of New Zealand’s top show-jumpers. Cardiff Hill was broken in by Paul Donnehy. He rose to B grade at the Isola event in 1985 and the next season won the B grade championship at Whangarei and every TA. event on the show-jumping circuit He had wins in the Grand Prix at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show and the Victor Ludorum event at the Canterbury championship circuit show last February. Cardiff Hill will be sadly missed on the show-jumping scene. The Dann Trophy was contested last week-end, 14 teams taking part This trophy is contested annually by teams from the branches of the Christchurch Pony Club.
