Clarke gains Whyte Trophy badminton selection
Jane Clarke, Canterbury’s leading badminton player of recent years, has been named in the New Zealand Whyte Trophy team to meet Australia in Tasmania in August. Clarke, aged 23, has just returned from 10 months in Britain and she intends living in Auckland for the
next two years. Clarke, a doubles specialist, joins Toni Whittaker and Katrin Lockley in the women’s team, with Lynne Bignell the nontravelling reserve. The three men are Graeme Robson, Glenn Stewart and Kerrin Harrison, with Phil Horne the non-travelling reserve. All
six selections live in Auckland. Clarke’s prospects appeared to have slipped a little when she was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Austin Cup singles in Gisborne last week-end. Vipond beat Bignell 11-6, 11-8 in the final of this event. However, her worth as
a doubles player obviously carried her through, along with the experiences she gained last year as a member of New Zealand’s Über Cup team. The Austin Cup men’s singles was won by Harrison. He beat Horne, 15-5, 18-17 in the final after being behind 3-12, at one stage in the second game.
