Specialised goat fibre facility planned
PA Wellington The Woolbrokers’ Association proposes to establish a specialised goat fibre handling facility to process cashmere and mohair fleece on behalf of growers. The brokers say this will substantially lower handling and classing costs, and provide storage facilities and staffing without tying up producers’ capital funds. The proposal, which, arises from discussions between the woolbrokers and the cashmere and mohair producers’ associations, still leaves the producers in control of the marketing function.
It is planned that a specialised goat fibre processing facility would be set up in a separate area of a North Island woolstore and operated by a single woolbroker, or a consortium of brokers. It would be able to offer goat fibre processing services to all-comers, said the general manager of the Woolbrokers’ Association, Mr Vince Connolly. The existing producerowned warehouse at Pukekohe was now too small for the expected volume of fleece in the coming season, and a new building would need to be bought or built, Mr Connolly said.
