Slump in Asian studies
PA Auckland Asian studies in New Zealand were at a low ebb, it was agreed at the seventh New Zealand Asian studies conference. This was not the fault of teachers, but resulted from a lack of Government and society support, said Professor Leonard Andaya, a member of the Centre for Asian Studies. A lack of support meant a lack of resources, he said, and few teachers taking up the Asian option in social studies. The centre set- up at Auckland University in 1984, aims to co-ordinate activities on Asia and promote Asia in the communities and universities.
