Firemen discover factory ablaze
Firemen returning from a call last evening discovered a disused factory in Riccarton Road ablaze from end to end.
The police were called to investigate the fire, which destroyed the 60m by 20m wooden building. “We don’t actually go out looking for fires,” said the senior station officer, Mr Jim McCaw. The Fire Service was called to a car fire at the Riccarton Mall at 7.17 p.m. but found nothing. “We could see the flames and smoke and came down to investigate it,” he said. Two more engines were called to the fire which took 20 minutes to control. Mr McCaw said firemen would probably be at the scene all night in case of flare-ups. A block of Riccarton Road was closed to traffic for several hours because
firemen had to run hoses from hydrants on the opposite side of the road. The building, at No. 33, was once a factory-but in recent years had been rented for storage by Hunter Lounge Suites, Ltd. The firm was no longer using the building and nothing of value is thought to have been in it.
