Banks suspend trading
Both the Christchurch banks said that the decision would normally follow the toppling of an overseas Government. A number of travellers to Fiji left Christchurch Airport yesterday afternoon for Auckland, in spite of a warning by Air New Zealand that it could not accept responsibility for any extra expenses if flights were diverted from Nandi Airport. Christchurch travel agents reported that numbers of holidaymakers had planned to travel to Fiji in the next few days. y One agent had been
told that the atmosphere was calm on the main island of Viti Levu. Other agents had received no information on the situation. Most tourists spend holidays at outlying island resorts rather than staying on the main island. According to one Christchurch agent, the main winter holiday season lasts from June to August. Telephone and telegraph links with Fiji were restored yesterday evening, but international toll circuits were jammed by calls, causing several hours delay.
