Cyclists’ safety
Sir, —I applaud the moves being made to encourage cyclists to wear safety, helmets but, as a motorist, I am very concerned to see that many cyclists now ride while listening to transistor radios and wearing earphones tightly clamped over their heads. This must detract from their concentration on traffic noises and movements. Rear-vision mirrors do not appear to be compulsory on cycles so can a cyclist who is listening to music or the spoken word really hear a car toot or a fire engine or ambulance siren? Has the Minis--try of Transport any control over this new cycling phenomenon? — Yours, etc., N. THOMPSON. May 2, 1987. [Traffic Superintendent I. W. McLaughlan replies: “I agree with your correspondent that it is very encouraging to see increasing numbers of cyclists wearing safety helmets. The wearing of radio headphones by cyclists is discouraged by the Ministry of Transport for the following reasons: (a) It precludes the wearing of cycle safety helmets, (b) The wearing of such devices tends to reduce cyclists’ awareness and warnings from other road-users.”]
