Two years overseas study for two

Two Christchurch high school pupils have won two out of three New Zealand scholarships for two years school study at United World Colleges. They are Jacquie Han* ham, aged 17 (left), of Linwood High School, who will go to a college in Wales, and Stephen McKnight, aged 16, of Lincoln High School, who will go to Vancouver. Both will leave in September, for two years. Schools throughout New Zealand were asked to noiiiinate one applicant each. Jacquie Hanham and Stephen McKnight were selected after national finals last week-end.

Jacquie Hanham, in Form 7, chose to go to Wales, partly because school for her there will be a 500-year-old castle. She is interested in history, and enjoys karate, drama and hockey.

Stephen McKnight, aged 16, will go to a college on Vancouver Island. His interests include soccer and debating.

Both say that while two years is a long time to be away they are looking forward to working and meeting people from 50 different countries.

The scholarships are almost fully funded by the New Zealand Government.
