Curbs wanted on bill’s power
PA Wellington The Police Association has asked for curbs on the “unlimited” power of a proposed authority to investigate complaints against its members. It said the Police Complaints Authority and Miscellaneous Amendments Bill, now before a Parliamentary select comittee, lacked adequate and proper safeguards for police officers against whom complaints were made. The association told the Justice and Law Reform Committee it . wanted a
“reasonable limitation” on the functions of the mooted Police Complaints Authority, and “appropriate safeguards” for police officers. “The extensive functions of the authority are neither necessary or desirable,” the association said in its written submission. The association, representing 5000 police below the rank of senior sergeant, said it accepted the authority should have powers to conduct its own investigations in cases of death or grievous bodily harm. -
