Racism

Sir,—R. Brett (May 9) applies only one meaning to the word racism. Most dictionaries list two inter-related meanings. First, discrimination based on supposed differences between races. Second, any political or social system based on such discrimination (Heinemann, 1979). In my experience, most people say they wish to avoid the first kind. However, the second kind is usually as invisible to those who belong to any race that controls the institutions of the society concerned as it is glaringly obvious to those races without a say in power-sharing. — Yours, etc., RHONA THORPE.
