Playground safety

Sir,—A week before Easter our 8-year-old son fell about 3 metres from the adventure structure at Thomson Park, landing heavily on one heel on to the hard-packed ground. Although there was no fracture, this injury has been very slow to heal and walking (on the ball of the foot) has had to be kept to a minimum to rest it — the only treatment possible. If the barrier on this very high structure extended

right up to the slide he would never have fallen. But, given that he did fall, what really concerns me is that the City Council does not feel obliged to provide the same standard of safety provisions required of school adventure playgrounds, where about 15cm of bark chips are laid to make a shock absorbent surface. The school holidays do not promise much for an active boy who would normally be playing soccer, etc. I trust the council will act speedily to improve the safety provisions in all playgrounds.—Yours, etc., M. SALLIS. , May 9, 1987.
