Mr Tambo’s visit
Sir,—A letter from our Prime Minister to a friend of mine gave the very definite impression that Oliver Tambo and his entourage had just been given permission to visit this country, yet all media reports indicate that he is a guest of the Government, a fact that tends to be confirmed by the fleet of official cars to take him and his entourage to their expensive hotel. Would “The Press” find, out and publish the facts on this, and, also, who is paying for this visit, and how much is it costing? — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. April 11, 1987.
[The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Lange, replies: “Mr Tambo asked if he might visit New Zealand. The Government agreed. He was not a guest of the Government but, as in Australia, it was agreed that the expenses of Mr Tambo and some members of his party should be met from the Overseas Visitors Fund on Vote Foreign Affairs: these included the cost of police protection officers and escorts as well as accommodation and transport expenses. The accounts have not yet been finalised, but the total cost is estimated at $28,000.”]
