“The Incredible Vanishing” by Denise Coffey, directed by Chris Stachurski for the Elmwood Players, Fulton Avenue. From May » to 16. Running time 7 p.m. to 8.20 p.m. Reviewed by Elody Rathgen.
The city seems alive at the moment with theatrical possibilities for young people to see, which is very exciting. “The Incredible Vanishing” at Elmwood Playhouse is another in the series of children’s entertainment. It is a*-very creditable, production by the director, Chris Stachurski. AU ‘the cast are well .. schooled in the roles and jolay with energy and enlEsiasnl. The play offerf
them opportunities to display a good range of talents. Peter Verstappen as PC Parker gives a particularly strong performance. He has a good sense of timing and a pleasant, clearly enunciated voice. His performance impressed because of his control and sincerity.
Greg Lovatt supports well as Bert Sparky and enjoys his sharp throwaway lines. An evenly sustained performance is given by Liz Weir as the sweet meter maid, Jenny Jones. J Characters from the understreet world are also well < established. Kerri Gallagher, Michael Tobin and Jo Barker portray the trio of Gob, Slurp and Twerp in suitably stu-
pid style. Tony Couch, “Her Marshesty,” has tremendous energy and gives a commanding performance. But vocally his shrillness irritates and takes away from the full pleasure which he otherwise gives. A limited but effective, and efficient set supports the production, as do the costumes and the accurate backstage crew. “The Incredible Vanishing” is a successful production in the hands of this team of actors. Some updated lines add to the comedy and old jokes are given unusual twists. Children and adults alike enjoyed the fun and responded excitedly to the adventure and to the calls for alienee response.
