Nurses abused for ban

PA Hamilton Nurses have been subject to “quite unnecessary levels of abuse” when trying to enforce the Waikato Hospital Board’s smoking ban, says the chief nurse, Ms Nancy Neilson. The board unanimously agreed to draft a nosmoking clause into its bylaws and to ask the super-intendent-in-chief to review the need to establish smoking cessation programmes in board institutions. The chief executive, Mr Glen Garlick, said the destruction of no-smoking signs had been such a problem, particularly in Waikato Hospital, that the manager was unable to justify the cost of their continued replacement. The board’s chairman, Mr Bob Gudex, said nursing staff had been subjected to personal abuse, obscenities and sometimes near physical abuse when trying to enforce the nonsmoking policy. Ms Neilson said staff had been subjected to “quite unacceptable levels of abuse.”
