Gatcombe’s Pride favoured in Jarden Mile
Special correspondent Wellington Gatcombe’s Pride seems sure to start a warm favourite for the $50,000 Jarden 1600 Handicap at the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni, this after-, noon. Already a course and distance winner, Gatcombe’s Pride quickly picked up his victory trail when easily disposing of 14 rivals over 1400 m on the first day at Trentham. Today’s 1600 m is unlikely to stop him from completing a double, for of his seven starts at the distance he has won three races and been placed twice. Senior rider, Jim Walker, replaces apprentice, Shane Keen, who had the mount at Trentham, experience presumably being of more worth than a claim in a field such as this. Followers of local trainer Margaret Bull’s highly successful team would be delighted if she saddled Bronze Valley to win. She is just one short of sending out 100 winners at Awapuni and has two chances to reach the mark today, her other runner being Winter Cheer in the last race. Bronze Valley has won over the distance on the course and his 1600 m record is good anyway — three wins and 12 places from 21 starts. He has to give 2.5 kg to Gatcombe’s Pride and with David Walsh in the saddle will be out to prove he can do it. Up from the South Island is the Washdyke-trained Jonny Alone, bidding for the $lOO,OOO bonus for winning the rich Jarden at Trentham in January and today’s feature. The last time he raced in the North Island was in March when two starts at Trentham saw him toiling Jetbet: 9 Race 1 11.45 WOOLREST HURDLES $5000; 2600 m. 1 0655 Swift Venture 9. ..... K. in the ruck of his fields. He has been freshened since, but will have to pull out a high performance to have a chance of gaining his bonus today. Whetu has been going great guns during the autumn, but at Te Rapa last time he ran wide on the turn and finished back down the field. He will not be able to afford to give any of the others a start at any stage today. Greatness came back to form with a mighty late run for second behind Field Dancer at Ellerslie last time and cannot be discounted. But perhaps one that could stop them all is Star Board. The former brilliant two-year-old now four, finally showed something of his best when successful and then second at the recent Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. He is pacy enough to stay with the front group and strong enough to launch a fierce challenge. Atrapar has plenty of experience of the course and distance and with Noel Harris aboard will come in for some solid support. However, his two runs last month at Ellerslie did not flatter him. The smart Levin-trained mare, Kosha, to be ridden by Garry Phillips, would not surprise if she won, but her recent efforts have not been encouraging. Silver Elm and David Walsh, successful on the first day of the recent Trentham meeting, combine again in the Jarden Corporation Handicap. The mare' made all the running over 2200 m and held on gamely for her win. Though upped one kilogram today she will take all the beating. 2 3 Avocation 16 P. Taylor 54.0 3 40 Band Quest 9 G.
