Shearers to meet over award
PA Wellington Shearers and shedhands will meet over the next three weeks to discuss their national award. ‘ The New Zealand Worker’s Union general secretary, Mr Dan Duggan, said the meetings were being held after award negotiations broke down last week in Christchurch. ' Mr Duggan said the talks broke down when the sheep owners union of employers were not prepared to acknowledge an agreement to restore relativity to shearers. Shearers were claiming 17 per cent and employers had offered only 4 per cent. Shearers accepted an increase of only 5.13 per cent last year because of the unviable situation of the wool industry. This year’s claim of 17 per cent took into account that low settlement, as well as average settlements of 15.5 per cent in other industries last year, Mr Duggan said.
In view of those factors, the employers’ offer was unacceptable. Projections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the projection of a Christchurch wool futures firm showed a “vibrant” and “buoyant” outlook over the next 18 months. Mr Duggan said.
