Chicago jazz-man returns

. The grand old man of Chicago jazz is coming back to Christchurch. | Art Hodes, Chicago’s i hotman of the 1920 s and 30s, will play a concert in the State Trinity Theatre for Jazz South next Tuesday at 8 p.m. He has been dubbed the custodian of the blues as the sole survivor of the Chicago pianists of that era. Art Hodes was born in Russia in 1904. His family emigrated to Chicago when he was six months old. As a youngster he had such musical mentors as Louis Armstrong. He was a fellow student of Benny Goodman. His first professional engagement as a pianist was at the Rainbow Gar- ' dens. He has played since then. His first visit to New Zealand was in 1984 when he came with his wife, Georgeann. Music for him is a thing of the heart rather than the head. He believes in earning his hotman title and putting all of himself into performances.
