Opera singer to take masterclass

The New Zealand opera singer, Noel Mangin, wil] present a masterclass in the Centre Gallery of the Arts Centre on Sunday, at 7 p.m.

Six local singers will take part in the masterclass, which the public can attend as observers.

After singing first as a tenor'and then as a baritone, Noel Mangin made his debut as a bass in 1960 as Don Basilio.

In 1961 he went to Europe and two years later joined the Sadlers Wells Opera Company (now the English National Opera) where his many roles included Pope Leo in "Attila”, Pogner, Sparafucile, Don Basilio and the Hermit in “Der Freischutz.”

He sang Sarastro in “The Magic Flute” for the New York City Opera, as Osmin and Zaccaria for the Prague National Opera in 1966. In 1967 he joined the Hamburg State Opera. His roles with this

company include Pogner, Don Pasquale, Rocco, Kecal, Colline, Falstaff and Osmin. He has also sung in Berlin, at the Glyndeboume Festival, Venice, Amsterdam, Turin, Zurich, Washington, Buenos Aires, Rome, Naples, at the Paris Opera under Boehm, in Seattle and at the Bath Festival under Menuhin. He made a recital tour for Radio New Zealand in 1979 and is a regular

guest artist with the Victoria State Opera. Noel Mangin appears each season with the Bavarian State Opera and with the Seattle Opera where he performs in both the English and German Ring Cycles. He sang the role of Fiesco in the Miami Opera’s “Simon Boccanegra” in January, 1982.

His career also includes performances of “The Trojans” for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras.

Noel Mangin’s recording of Schubert’s “Die Winterreise” with fellow New Zealander, Donald Bowick, was released in 1979 on the Kiwi-Pacific label. He was awarded the 0.8. E. for his services to music in 1981.

Last year he sang with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and has more recently sung in Verdi’s “Requiem” in Wellington. He is based in Brisbane with the Queensland Opera Company.
