South African elections

Sir,—The South African Government’s victory at the polls will give it confidence to deal positively with the problems with which it is faced. I would anticipate a stronger and more confident resolve to do and say what is required, paying less heed to the browbeating by the West, confidently doing what is required to stamp out the A.N.C. terrorism in South Africa itself and, in particular, the horrific practice of "necklacing.” It is high time that people who are completely ignorant of the problems in South Africa stopped making utterly impractical suggestions, such as “one man, one vote.” Recent history proves that this does not work in Africa, the result being a one-party dictatorship; no more elections after the first one. A large number of South African detractors are communists, not concerned in the slightest about the

welfare of the people of South Africa. They just want communist (i.e., Soviet) control of the country.—Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. May 9, 1987.
