Fijian politician charged with sedition
NZPA Suva Fiji’s Opposition spokesman on communication, Works and Transport, Apisai Tora, was arrested on Sunday and charged with sedition and inciting racial antagonism, police sources said.
A police spokesman said the charge was filed after police invoked the Public Order Act. Mr Tora, a former cabinet minister in the previous Alliance Government, has been released on bail and will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court tomorrow week. He has been an influential leader of the “Taukei movement,” the Fijian protest group calling for a change in the Constitution.
The protest group wants the Constitution changed to guarantee Fijian majority in the House of Representatives which would ultimately guarantee Fijian leadership in the country of 700,000 people.
