Playground safety causes concern

PA Dunedin Members of the New Zealand Playcentre Federation are concerned by the lack of safety standards in public playgrounds. A remit urging the Government to ensure all playgrounds conform to the New Zealand Standard Specification for playgrounds and playground equipment was supported at the federation’s annual conference in Dunedin yesterday. The equipment convener for the Waikato Playcentre, Mrs Heather Vaile, said standards were not being adhered to strictly enough.

According to statistics from a 1980 Accident Compensation Corporation report there were 609 compensation claims resulting from falls of children aged under 15, Mrs Vaile said. These were only the accidents reported to the A.C.C. and did not include injuries treated by a general practitioner or accident and emergency departments at hospitals. Dental injuries were not included in the figure. Only serious injuries were reported, and "things like teeth being knocked out and fractures would not be recorded,” she said.
