Police find ringing alarm in letter box
By
NEIL CLARKSON
Alarming news greeted a Colombo Street resident woken from a sound sleep by the pplice yesterday morning. “Excuse me, sir, but your house alarm is sounding,” he was told after the police entered his house through an unlocked door.
"I don’t have a house alarm,” he replied. A search revealed that the source of the noise was inside the man’s letter box.
An alarm box, stolen from another building, had been torn
off and placed in the man’s mail box.
The police took the noisy apparatus to the Christchurch South Station, Sydenham, where it was drowned in a sink of water. The police had been called to the address soon after 7 a.m. when a resident reported hearing what sounded like a house alarm.
A patrol car was sent and the noise pinpointed to a Colombo Street house near the Port Hills. The police searched the property which was secure apart from an unlocked door.
They entered and found the occupant sleeping soundly. . Senior-Sergeant Mike Moore, of the Christchurch South Station, said the white alarm box must have been removed from another building. Cutting the wires to remove it would have triggered the bat-tery-operated alarm, meaning 4 the thieves transported the device while it sounded. The home-owner was mystified why his letter box was chosen, said Senior-Sergeant Moore. The alarm box is being kept at the Christchurch South Station awaiting claimants.
