Mr Murray Francis, of Francis Construction, Ltd, Christchurch, checks the laser level instrument as it feeds readings into a receiver on an earth-scraper (right), driven by Mr Jack Rari, of Christchurch. The $35,000 instrument feeds in information on ground formation that sets the grader’s levels and allows it to achieve an accuracy of about one millimetre. Once the equipment has been set, no further checking is needed. The driver, who sets up the equipment, does not have to leave his machine.
