Tribute paid to picketers
Wellington reporter
The Federation of Labour paid tribute to the 23 picketers who “stood firm” for 143 days during the wool-testing dispute in Christchurch.
Although the dispute was initially between the Wool Testing Authority and the Public Service Association, the F.O.L. was drawn in when the authority claimed that its workers should be represented by the Woollen Workers’ Union.
The F,O.L.’s president, Mr Jim Knox, also applauded the Woollen Workers’ Union, which had rejected employer arguments to represent the workers.
Mr Knox, who visited the picket line, condemned the tactics of the authority during the dispute. He suggested that
the employers had tried to show that “contestability can work.” The F.O.L. has warned that the Labour Relations Bill, which is likely to be reported back from a select committee ' today, will encourage contestability, or disputes between unions over membership.
