Effects of campaign hard to find

No evidence has been found that the Ministry of Transport’s 1986 antispeeding campaign has altered drivers’ behaviour, according to the Ministryis traffic engineer, Mr John Barnes. Mr Barnes released his survey findings to the annual conference of the Institute of Professional Engineers at the University of Canterbury yesterday.
The campaign was run in October, last year as part of the Ministry’s “let’s get the road toll down” exercise. The objective was to change motorists’ speed behaviour.
Mr .Barnes said the campaign might have been unsuccessful, in spite of 35 television advertisements and the wide distribution of leaflets on the subject. *
